Darren Beck

Darren Beck is no stranger to UMA having served on the founding board as it made its way through the approval process and through the first year of cadets who graduated at an excellent ceremony in the Hill AFB Air Museum. Beck has taught 5th and 6th grades in Salinas, California at Creekside Elementary School and in Marysville, California's Kynoch Elementary School. He taught Spanish at Sutter High School and was the Colusa County Office of Education's Manager for the Birth-to-Five program working primarily in that agricultural area with migrant families. In 2003, Darren taught Middle School History and Spanish at American Preparatory Academy in Draper. He took on the School Director at The Ranches Academy in 2004, leading that school until 2008. He then helped develop and lead Rockwell Charter High School until January 2010, having also served as the Board Chair for the Utah Association for Public Charter Schools. Upon leaving Rockwell, he took a position with the Association and Director of the East Hollywood High grant project on developing successful charter schools. He left the Association in January 2011 and went to work for Harmony Education Services as Director of Strategic Development. Between 2005 and 2015, Mr. Beck was involved in assisting with or writing significant parts of 12 public charter schools that are in operation today. As fortune seemed to have it, by 2012, he was back at Rockwell, where he currently serves as the school's Executive Director. He has been married for over 26 years to Paula Lee Paulsen of Orem, Utah and they have six children (Paden 25, Madison 23, Ansley 21, Keegan 19, Dylan 18, and Cormac 15) with each one having attended Rockwell and all but Dylan (Class of 2019) and Mac (Class of 2021) having graduated from it. Darren is an avid baseball (and overall sports) fan, loves movies, books, and walking and hiking. Even with all of these other interests and efforts, Mr. Beck is a huge fan of the Utah Military Academy and the promise it is consistently keeping with each cadet to help prepare them for a productive and intentional life.
